One Radio Show and Trip Down Memory Lane: Monday Michiru and Sydney

So, last Saturday morning, I was on air as a radio announcer. This was only my second time and no wonder the night before I was feeling super nervous. I got up at half past four in the morning thinking “why did I sign up for this?” (yes I was that nervous), took a shower, had a cup of warm tea and off I went to Brava studio in FX.

At 6 o’clock in the morning, after the national anthem and the radio jingle, it was my turn to talk. The adrenaline kicked in and I started to enjoy my time in the studio. No more “why did I sign up for this”, I thought “this was fun!” instead 🙂 And I think I did well on the opening! *phew

The opening song added some more boost to my mood. It was Monday Michiru’s uplifting “Emerald Life”. Ooh, I love this radio! My mind started to wander to my experience with Sister Duke, performing at Monday’s and PAC Martha Tilaar’s press conference last year. We had a great time!

Monday and Pak Kiki from PAC asked me to join them for the photo session.

We performed approximately 9 songs that afternoon, including our rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”

The boys also had an impromptu jam with Monday too. They nailed Minnie Ripperton’s classic “Loving You”.

It was lovely meeting Monday again. Our first encounter was in 2007, when we had the opportunity to be the opening act for her show in Bali.

I was so excited to meet her in person at that time. Once I got to know her, how humble and down to earth she was, she became even more inspiring!

And she’ll be performing at Java Jazz Festival this year 🙂 But too bad we’re performing at the same time so I won’t be able to see her performance with her band 😦 But I hope there’ll be another show during her stay in Jakarta.

Back in the studio, I was preparing myself for another talk when I noticed the title of the song before the talk was “Turn Back the Clock” by Johnny Hates Jazz. What a coincidence! Using the trick I got from my mentor, Leonardo Ringo, I used the song title as a bridge to my talk topic (I hope you’re proud of me, cikgu Leo!). I asked the listeners to turn back the clock to a decade ago, when I lived in Sydney and everything was way much cheaper than today. At that time Australian Dollar was lower than US Dollar, even at the end of 2001 its rate was half of US Dollar’s. Ten years ago the city did not even rate in the top 50 most expensive in the world and now it’s ranked third. Wow!

How I miss the city, I wish I could go back visit it soon and relive the good times I had. Hey, I might even perform there someday! 😀
